How to renew your licence disc

You must renew your vehicle licence every year before it expires. You get a 21-day grace period from the expiry date; after that, late licensing penalties and arrears apply.
1 point we are still verifying
  • Late licensing penalties are calculated on eNaTIS under National Road Traffic Regulation 57. We have not yet checked the regulation's wording against an official copy, so KayaDisc does not estimate penalties.

Where to renew

  • At your registering authority (the municipal or provincial licensing office), or at a selected post office that issues motor vehicle licences.
  • On NaTIS Online, the Road Traffic Management Corporation's platform at online.natis.gov.za. You create a profile with your name, ID number and address, choose “View Motor Renewals”, select the vehicle and pay by card. The new disc is delivered to you.

What to take to the counter

  • Your identity document.
  • Proof of residential address, such as a utility account. If it is not in your name, the account holder makes an affidavit that you live there, with the bill attached. In an informal settlement, a dated, stamped letter from the ward councillor.
  • The renewal notice (MVL2). If you did not receive one, complete form ALV (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle).
  • For a vehicle registered to a company or organisation: its business certificate, the proxy's ID and a letter of proxy.

What you pay

  • The licence fee in your province's gazetted schedule for your vehicle's tare. See licence fees by province.
  • The R72 RTMC transaction fee on each licence.
  • On NaTIS Online, a delivery fee: R28 by mail, R72 by registered mail or R99 by courier.
  • If you are past the grace period, arrears and penalties calculated on eNaTIS. We do not estimate these.

Buses and heavy vehicles

If your vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy load vehicle, you need a roadworthiness certificate to renew. Bus licences are renewed every six months, because their roadworthiness certificate is valid for six months only. See when you need a roadworthy certificate.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the grace period for an expired licence disc?

21 days, counted from the expiry date on your current disc. After that you are liable for late licensing penalties and arrears.

I did not get a renewal notice. Can I still renew?

Yes. Complete an Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle (ALV) form at the registering authority instead of bringing the MVL2 notice.

Can I renew my licence disc online?

Yes, on NaTIS Online (online.natis.gov.za). You register a profile, choose "View Motor Renewals", pick the vehicle and pay by card. The RTMC regulations set a delivery fee of R28 (mail), R72 (registered mail) or R99 (courier).

What happens if I don't renew for years?

Arrears and penalties build up, and according to the government's service page a vehicle's registration becomes null and void if its licence disc has not been renewed for more than four years.
