General information, not an official quote. Not a government site and not eNaTIS. Fees follow each province's gazetted schedule; your renewal notice or registering authority has the final amount.
Vehicle registration and transfer cost
Buying a used car, bakkie or motorcycle? Choose your province to see the gazetted registration fee, then add the licence if the disc is due and a roadworthy test where your province sets the fee.
6 points we are still verifying
Late licensing penalties are calculated on eNaTIS under National Road Traffic Regulation 57. We have not yet checked the regulation's wording against an official copy, so KayaDisc does not estimate penalties.
Find the current Eastern Cape registration and licence fee schedule in the Provincial Gazette (or from the Department of Transport) and transcribe item 1, 2.1 and 2.2.
Replace with the final 2026/27 Gauteng schedule once it is promulgated in the Provincial Gazette.
Confirm that no later KwaZulu-Natal fee schedule has replaced Provincial Notice 5 of 2020.
Confirm the exact date the Limpopo 2026/27 fees took effect.
Confirm with the North West department whether the R798 for 2 001–2 250 kg (item 2.2) is correct; other items in the same gazette list R1 014 for that band.

General information, not an official quote. KayaDisc gives general information and estimates based on each province's registration and licence fee schedule as published in its Provincial Gazette, and on the Road Traffic Management Corporation's transaction and NaTIS Online fees in the Government Gazette. It is not an official quote and not legal advice. KayaDisc is not a government website and is not connected to the Department of Transport, the RTMC, eNaTIS, any provincial transport department or any registering authority. Late penalties and arrears are not included. Check the amount on your renewal notice (MVL2) or with your registering authority before you pay. This covers fees paid to the registering authority. It does not include a dealer's admin or delivery fees, a private roadworthy test, arrears or penalties.
What the buyer pays
Registration fee. A once-off fee in each province's schedule (item 1 of the fee schedule).
Licence fee, if due. The vehicle's licence must be up to date when you register. If the disc has expired, you pay the year's licence fee for your tare, plus the RTMC transaction fee.
Roadworthy test. Needed if the existing certificate is older than 60 days. Mpumalanga and Western Cape set a fee for a test at a registering authority in the same gazette; we show it there. Elsewhere we leave it out rather than guess.
Steps
The seller submits a notification of change of ownership (NCO) and hands you the registration certificate. You apply on the RLV form at your registering authority within 21 days. See the change of ownership guide and when you need a roadworthy certificate.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to transfer a car into my name?
The buyer pays the province's registration fee, from R132 to R310 in the provinces we have verified. If the licence disc has expired or is due, you also pay the licence fee and the R72 transaction fee.
Who pays for the change of ownership?
The buyer registers the vehicle and pays the registration fee. The seller must notify the registering authority of the sale on the NCO form.
How long do I have to register a car I bought?
21 days from the change of ownership. After that you pay arrears and penalties.
Do I need a roadworthy certificate?
For a used vehicle, if the existing certificate is older than 60 days. Mpumalanga gazettes R110 for a test at a registering authority; Western Cape gazettes R198 for a test at a registering authority. Private testing stations set their own prices.
