Licence disc renewal cost calculator

Choose the province where your vehicle is registered and enter its tare. We add the provincial licence fee from the latest gazetted schedule we could verify, the R72 RTMC transaction fee and, if you renew on NaTIS Online, the delivery fee.
6 points we are still verifying
  • Late licensing penalties are calculated on eNaTIS under National Road Traffic Regulation 57. We have not yet checked the regulation's wording against an official copy, so KayaDisc does not estimate penalties.
  • Find the current Eastern Cape registration and licence fee schedule in the Provincial Gazette (or from the Department of Transport) and transcribe item 1, 2.1 and 2.2.
  • Replace with the final 2026/27 Gauteng schedule once it is promulgated in the Provincial Gazette.
  • Confirm that no later KwaZulu-Natal fee schedule has replaced Provincial Notice 5 of 2020.
  • Confirm the exact date the Limpopo 2026/27 fees took effect.
  • Confirm with the North West department whether the R798 for 2 001–2 250 kg (item 2.2) is correct; other items in the same gazette list R1 014 for that band.

General information, not an official quote. KayaDisc gives general information and estimates based on each province's registration and licence fee schedule as published in its Provincial Gazette, and on the Road Traffic Management Corporation's transaction and NaTIS Online fees in the Government Gazette. It is not an official quote and not legal advice. KayaDisc is not a government website and is not connected to the Department of Transport, the RTMC, eNaTIS, any provincial transport department or any registering authority. Late penalties and arrears are not included. Check the amount on your renewal notice (MVL2) or with your registering authority before you pay. Late penalties and arrears are not included. Vehicles above 3 500 kg tare, trailers and caravans have other rows in the gazettes.

How the renewal cost is worked out

Every province sets its own annual licence fees in a schedule published in its Provincial Gazette. For cars, bakkies, SUVs and minibuses the fee goes up in 250 kg steps of tare (empty mass). Motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles pay one flat fee. On top of the provincial fee, the RTMC regulations add a R72 transaction fee to each licence.

We have verified 8 of the 9 provinces against their gazettes. A province we could not verify is marked “coming soon” and shows no amount.

Renewing

You can renew at your registering authority, at a post office that issues licences, or on NaTIS Online. Read how to renew your licence disc for the documents and the grace period, or compare every province.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a licence disc renewal?

It depends on the province where the vehicle is registered and its tare. For a 1 200 kg car, the Gauteng licence fee is R528, so with the R72 transaction fee you pay R600 at a counter. Use the calculator for your province and tare.

What is the R72 transaction fee?

A fee set by the Road Traffic Management Corporation Regulations, collected on each licence application on top of the provincial licence fee. It does not apply to vehicles that are exempt from licence fees.

Does renewing on NaTIS Online cost more?

The licence and transaction fees are the same, but you pay for delivery: R28 by ordinary mail, R72 by registered mail or R99 by courier, according to the RTMC regulations. A 1 200 kg car in the Western Cape renewed online with courier delivery comes to R663.

Where do I find my vehicle's tare?

On the vehicle registration certificate and on the licence disc itself, as "Tare" in kilograms. It is the vehicle's mass when empty.

What if I renew late?

You have a 21-day grace period from the expiry date. After that, eNaTIS adds arrears and penalties, which this calculator does not estimate.
