Trailer licence fees by province
A trailer has its own yearly licence fee, set by tare in each province's fee schedule. For a small trailer of 251–500 kg it ranges from R204 (Western Cape) to R348 (Mpumalanga) a year.
6 points we are still verifying
Confirm with the Eastern Cape Department of Transport that the 2016 Schedule 4A amounts for items 1, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.7 are still charged; the 2018 notice says it repeals a notice in Gazette 3581 but prints only items 2.3 and 2.4.
Replace with the final 2026/27 Gauteng schedule once it is promulgated in the Provincial Gazette (not published as at 30 October 2026).
Confirm that no later KwaZulu-Natal fee schedule has replaced Provincial Notice 5 of 2020.
Confirm the exact date the Limpopo 2026/27 fees took effect.
Confirm with the Limpopo department that the trailer fees (NaTIS code 09) are meant to equal the motor vehicle fees; the notice's item headings are not aligned with its rows.
Confirm with the North West department whether the R798 for 2 001–2 250 kg (item 2.2) is correct; other items in the same gazette list R1 014 for that band.

Yearly trailer licence fee for common sizes
Annual trailer licence fee (rand), before the R72 transaction fee
For a light trailer of 251–500 kg tare, the yearly licence fee ranges from R204 in Western Cape to R348 in Mpumalanga, plus the R72 national transaction fee.
Is a trailer licence cheaper than a car licence?
Usually, because trailers are lighter and each province sets a separate trailer row in its fee schedule. Compare both in the licence fees by province table.
Are caravans and farm trailers charged the same?
Not always. Provincial schedules list caravans and trailers used only for the owner's own farming separately. We do not list those rows, so check your renewal notice or ask your registering authority.
Will Gauteng's trailer fees go up?
Gauteng published draft increases for comment in August 2026. As at 30 October 2026 no final schedule had been gazetted, so the current figures are from the 2025 schedule.
